Writing your own spells

Almost every experienced witch says it: Write your own spells. Many of us would like to, but are not sure how to. These are some guidelines that can help you.


Why write your own spells?
There are several reasons to write your own spells. The most important reasons are to make it perfectly suited for your goal, and because it will be made just for you, with your own abilities, strengths and weaknesses.


Preparation

Choose a goal.

You will need a goal that is specific, or you might get something you did not expect.
“Getting more energy” sounds great, doesn’t it? Now imagine your wish was to get more energy in the morning to start your day. When you’re asking to get more energy, it could be any kind of energy. What would happen if getting more energy meant being unable to sleep well at night? Or if you got a bunch of energy that you don’t know what to do with?
This is why you should be specific.

It should also be said that the more you know about the reasons for wanting this, the easier it will be to come up with wording, ingredients and execution.
For instance if you wish to finally leave your parents’ house and find a home of your own, why do you want this? It might be because you feel like you’re getting to old to live with your parents, or because you want to live an independent life.


Write down what you want.

Make it simple, a statement.

Again, be specific to get exactly what you want. Try to word it so that you will get it at the moment you want it and exactly how you want it.

“I will get a house.” is short, but there are some flaws. There is no way of saying when you will get it. “I will get a house before my 25th birthday.” is much more specific when it comes to time.. “I will own a house before my 25th birthday.” is even more specific. You own it, you don’t just rent it, or get to live in a house before your 25th birthday. You can add all the wishes you have to make it more specific.

Example: I will own a house that I will comfortably live in and be happy with before my 25th birthday.

How to reach your goal.

What could possibly go wrong, right?
Think of all the things that could happen.
What if the easiest way for you to get that house, is if a familiy member died so you could inherit it? This, of course, is a worst case scenario, but it’s better to prevent anything like this from happening.
Write down exactly what you do and do not want to happen.
With everything you rule out, another obstacle might be created. Keep writing down conditions for your spell untill you are satisfied with any possible outcomes.

Remember it’s not always possible to not hurt anyone, but if you can’t live with the idea of someone losing their home so you can buy the house, think about the possible outcomes and change things until you find something you can live with.
Some witches honestly do not care what happens to others as long as they get what they want, and that’s fine too. Just be sure of what you can and can not live with.


Example: I will own a house that I will comfortably live in and be happy with before my 25th birthday.

No one dies in order for me to get the house.
No one will lose their home in order for met to get the house.


Researching ingredients.

Now that you know your goal and reasons, you should start researching ingredients.

For this specific house thing you want is related to personal success and home, so those are the first things you’re going to be looking for in ingredients. See it as keywords, and find a better description of the meaning/correspondence by using those words.

You find out that Agar Agar is associated with joy and success.
Hollyhock is also associated with success but it is also associated with aquiring new possessions.

Both of them could work, since you want to find joy in your new home, but it doesn’t seem to support our spell enough. Hollyhock could help you get that new possession, that house, and is associated with the success you’re looking for.

Research as much as you can about the ingredients. What are they used for? Where do they grow? are they dangerous? What does folklore say about them? What do you associate it with?

So, let’s say we chose Hollyhock. Many people associate it with the cozy cottages and where I’m from, it grows next to many people’s front door.


Writing the spell.

There are many different ways to use the ingredients, so let’s come up with a spell first.
You will want to include what you want and what you do not want to happen. Some people like to strong imagery (elements for example, earth might be a good choice for finding a house, so use imagery associated with earth), others prefer rhyme, repeating, et cetera.
Check to see if everything is worded the way it should be, so that it doesn’t cause any problems.


Adding the ingredients.

What you’re tying to do here is find something for you, so it should be sent on it’s way to do it’s work.
This can be done many ways. Burning is one way, sending the spell out with the smoke. It can also be done by things like crunching the dried ingredients and putting them in running water,

If you want things to affect you specifically, you should keep the ingredients on you. Things such as giving you luck, hiding your presence, making you seem better suited for a job.

If you want things to affect someone else, bury it close to them, or put it close to them in another way. If you’re unable to, you can always burn it to send it towards them with the wind.

If you want things to affect an area (such as your home) bury it near your home, or hang it somewhere.

There are many other ways which you should research.


Research timing.

Not everyone feels like this is important, but some witches do. Things like moon phases:
Waxing for gain, increasing. Waning for decreasing, sending away. New moon for changes, new ideas, new situations. Full moon for divination, seeing clearly. Usually it’s seen as perfect for any magick.

Another thing to consider are the seasons. There is a time for sowing, growing, harvesting and rest. The same goes for the times of day, each has it’s own strengths and weaknesses to consider, as do you. Choose a time you feel comfortable with. If you are a morning person, get up early and cast your spell. If you stay up late at night, do a nighttime spell.


Other things to consider.

The deities and spirits you work with. Some are helpful for a specific spell, others are not. If you want to ask them for help, consider who they are and what they do before doing so.
Surroundings. You can practice witchcraft anywhere, but in some cases it might be smart not to do certain things inside the house.
Evidence/dangers. If you bury something in someones back yard, their dog might dig it up. If it’s something they can chew on, they might eat it, or the owner finds it. If you hide something in someone’s desk at work, chances are that they find it as well.


Casting the spell.

Now that all this work is done, you can cast the spell. You combine the words with the work (burning, making a sachet to keep on you, et cetera). If you work ritually, consider how this would affect the spell.

If you see any results, write them down. Keep records of what you do.
